"Harry Potter y la Piedra Filosofal" was first published in Spanish in December 1998 by Emecé Editores in Argentina. Its success would later take it to other countries, such as Spain and the rest of Latin America, but it was here where Harry Potter spoke in our language for the first time. Now, 25 years have passed since the publication of that edition, with translation by Alicia Dellepiane Rawson and illustrations by Dolores Avendaño.
On the occasion of this 25th anniversary, Patricio Tarantino (a collector of Harry Potter and J.K. Rowling books) has collaborated with Dolores Avendaño who has personally and uniquely illustrated, numbered and signed ten copies of the original edition.
The 10 copies, numbered and presented in a box made for the occasion by Taller Adore.
This is a project to commemorate the 25 years since the first publication of "Harry Potter y la Piedra Filosofal" in Spanish. The idea was to intervene in 10 copies of the original editions from Emecé Editores, the publisher that translated and first released Harry Potter in Spanish. To accomplish this, Dolores Avendaño, who created the illustrations for all the covers of the Spanish editions of Harry Potter books, designed an original illustration of Harry alongside his owl Hedwig, which she applied to the 10 intervened copies.
These copies are currently available for sale to collectors and enthusiasts worldwide who want to add a unique copy to their collection. To protect these unique books, a protective box has also been created and is included with each book.
This project was conceived by Patricio Tarantino, a Harry Potter and J.K. Rowling collector, and the author of the book "Secret History of the Wizarding Phenomenom" (TRL Books, 2021). The project is not of an official nature and does not have the support of publishers or any entity related to the Harry Potter brand.
The illustration has been designed by the artist specifically for this project and has not been published in any other medium. Each of the 10 illustrations is created directly on the original copies using colored pencils. Each one is signed and numbered by the artist. They are not prints.
All copies in this project are original editions from Emecé Editores of "Harry Potter y la Piedra Filosofal." The copies are not first prints, as the difficulty in finding them, even in poor conditions, hindered the feasibility of this project. Therefore, it was decided to consistently use original editions from Emecé (known as those "without the yellow border"), without distinguishing between prints. To make it fair for those acquiring copies, no first print intervened by the artist is available for sale.
Considering that these are books over 20 years old and were not produced with the best materials (as their durability was not intended to last nearly two decades) the books are in good condition. We have aimed to work only with books that have no writing, stickers, or torn pages. Some copies may have yellowed pages, a natural result of the passage of time. The 10 copies that are part of this project can be seen in the photo gallery above.
Buyers will not have the authority to choose which copy or number they receive. Selections will be made randomly.
The box was crafted by Taller Adore, owned by Flor Goldztein, who, with a conservation-focused approach, engages in contemporary bookbinding (both traditional and design-oriented), restoration of antique books, and box making. It is a clamshell box, covered in blue cloth. The title is gold-foil stamped using an antique Minerva, mimicking the design of the original cover. It features a detail on its spine. The interior is made of acid-free paper, with a ribbon for easy book removal. Additionally, it includes a card indicating the copy number it safeguards and providing a description of the project's purpose.
These copies were the only ones produced for the 25th anniversary of "Harry Potter y la Piedra Filosofal" in Spanish, and there are no plans to create more copies. Only 10 copies have been produced.
